Beyond the Roadmap

Reduction Roadmap is a project that translated the remaining carbon budget to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels into targets for the Danish building industry. Since its launch in 2022, the team behind Reduction Roadmap has rallied a political campaign for lowering carbon limits in the Danish building code and formed a non-profit association. "Beyond the Roadmap" is a phase of this project that asks - what next? As the lead author on the report, I worked with a wide team of collaborators to outline, research, write, and illustrate our findings. Moving beyond "carbon tunnel vision" to seeing connected crises and addressing root causes (Chapter 1).

Taking stock of existing correlations between material footprint, GDP, energy use, and CO2 emissions (Chapter 1).

Well-intentioned strategies to limit environmental harm are undermined within a growth-oriented economy - like down an escalator that is going up. The same strategies can become solutions within a sufficiency-based economy (Chapter 2).

Conceptual framework for the transition away from a degenerative state. A distinction is made between "doing no harm" versus "paying back the accrued deficit" (Chapter 3).

The Butterfly framework - pairing climate change metrics with biocapacity metrics to chart a path to a livable future, in the context of Denmark (Chapter 3).
