Contextualizing the project within other UBC initiatives.
Speculative section through the Applied One building, showcasing potential spaces and uses for active learning.
Short fictional narratives to describe potential use of the space.
I am running a bit late for office hours, which I’ve decided to hold on the top mezzanine of Applied One - in case no one shows up today, at least I’ll be able to see my research lab’s latest project coming together in the hangar. I cross Main Mall quickly, and spotting a group of touring prospective students gathered at the main entrance to Applied One, decide to take a less traveled route through Fairview Commons. Peering through the large, transparent north-facing facade, I remark on the different projects that have materialized on multiple floors seemingly in the last week - looks like Materials is setting up another round of testing, the joint studio between SALA and Indigenous Community Planning joint studio is mocking up their latest design on level two, and it’s difficult to tell what’s going on in the mezzanine - although I remind myself I will get a chance to look at it soon, and keep going through the drizzle. I duck into the northwest doors. Unlike the outside, the interior street is dry and bright - I take off my hood and keep going towards the “main street” of Applied One, passing by the gantry crane shop to my left. As I round the corner to the main street, I notice that Mining must have gotten a new shipment of samples - a forklift is driving through the garage door, back and forth between CMP and the Applied One shop. I take the stairs up past the faculty offices & enter into the large, top-floor space. Some areas are being used to display student work on pin-up boards - some students are enjoying a late lunch looking out over Fairview Commons - others seem to be studying. I climb up to the mezzanine, find my small meeting room, erase the whiteboard & glass screen, and open my laptop.
